There is still that love for his stories, his characters, his moral messages, and that's just so exciting for me. It was me what made you a gentleman, Pip (laughter). (As Magwitch) (Laughter) It was me what done it. Today, the hall's almost full.ĭICKENS: Well, what's wonderful from a family member's point of view is that people still want to soak up Dickens' work in whatever medium, whatever format it's offered in. REEVES: Gerald has been staging adaptations of his great-great-grandfather Charles' works around the world for 30 years in theaters and libraries, in schools and on ships. REEVES: Gerald Dickens is playing all the parts - from the central character, Pip, to one of English literature's most mesmerizing creations, Miss Havisham, the recluse seeking vengeance against men after being jilted at the altar.ĭICKENS: (As Miss Havisham) Love her. REEVES: The actor is a great-great-grandson of Dickens himself.ĭICKENS: (As Miss Havisham) Do you know what I touch here? The play is "Great Expectations."ĭICKENS: (As Miss Havisham) Come near. PHILIP REEVES, BYLINE: We're in a hall in a community center in Frodsham, a small market town in northwest England. GERALD DICKENS: (As Miss Havisham) Who is it? Hester and Dimmesdale – two prominent characters harboring the most damnable sin of their era – appear to have had a contrite heart after the act, particularly with Hester, who is publicly announced and disgraced. The sin for which she is being punished is that of adultery – which she commits with a Christian preacher, Arthur Dimmesdale.īeing she lives in the era of a Christian-inspired puritan society, her punishment becomes one of massive social shaming and disgrace – whereby she has to wear a dress with a large inscription of the letter ‘A’ appearing on her chest in blood red color. Hester Prynne, who is the heroine of the book, is one of the characters who bear such guilts of sin and punishment. These are probably the two most obvious themes of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘ The Scarlet Letter’ and they are very clearly executed throughout the pages of the book – beginning from the first chapter. The most important ones will be analyzed in this article. There are some foundational themes as there are other subsets that still carry a vital message in them. Hawthorne’s move to go by such name as ‘ The Scarlet Letter’ for the book’s title is symbolic in itself and already hints at the themes of penitence and punishment for the crime of adultery committed by two of the book’s major characters in Hester Prynne and the priest – Arthur Dimmesdale. The book was first published in 1939 France under the name Rafi et les 9 Singes. They named her Rafi and included a cast of monkeys: Madame Pamplemoose, Zozo, Sirocco, Zig Zag, Cactus, Carabaa, Carabee, Caraboo, and Fifi. This giraffe became the inspiration for their very first children's book. One day Hans drew a sweet cartoon giraffe and later it was published in a magazine. When they lived in Brazil they were surrounded by all types of monkeys, and even had two tiny ones as pets!Īfter their marriage in 1936 they moved to Paris, France where they could earn a living in the arts. When ever they were in a new city they would always make a point of visiting the local zoo where they would draw and take photographs of the animals. Both became writers and artist who eventually traveled the world together. As children they would visit the Hagenbeck Zoo. Margarete and Hans Augusto Reyersbach were both born in Hamburg Germany. In that story, one of the monkeys, Fifi would later become known as Curious George. I was then surprised to learn this book is where Curious George was first imagined! The history of the Rey's lives and how Curious George came to be is heartwarming. and the 9 Monkeys and was thrilled to learn that this was the first children's book written by Margret and Hans Rey, the creators of the lovable Curious George. Ragnvald’s father was killed when he was but a kid, and while by law he should have the petty kingdom his father ruled, he and his sister have been living mostly by sufferance with their stepfather. The book opens with Ragnvald coming home from raiding and nearly getting killed by the captain of his ship (on orders from Ragnvald’s stepfather). It’s decidedly dark in comparison to the Viking romances that wax and wane in popularity. It’s a Viking saga of revenge, politics, and nation building. It’s told from the point of view of one of Harald’s dudes, Ragnvald, and his sister, Svanhild. The trilogy charts the rise of Harald and how he became the first king of Norway in the 9th century. The Half-Drowned King is the first in a planned trilogy that is a heavily fictionalized retelling of the Saga of Harald Fairhair, which is one of the parts of the Heimskringla, an Icelandic Saga written in the 13th Century by Snorri Sturluson. Genre: Historical: European, Literary Fiction As a fellow history nerd I was so excited when she started doing a Twitter series with the amazing forgotten women of history. I have been a follower of hers since before her debut came out. Coupled with riveting illustrations and Lee’s humorous and conversational storytelling style, this book is an outright celebration of the badass women who paved the way for the rest of us. Starting in the fifth century BC and continuing to the present, the book takes a closer look at bold and inspiring women who dared to step outside the traditional gender roles of their time. With tales of heroism and cunning, in-depth bios and witty storytelling, Bygone Badass Broads gives new life to these historic female pioneers.
